11. Income Taxes
The Company and its subsidiaries file a consolidated U.S. federal income tax return and income tax returns in various state and foreign jurisdictions. With certain exceptions, the Company is no longer subject to U.S. federal, state and local, or non-U.S. income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2017.
The Company’s effective income tax rate was approximately 27% and 26% during the three months ended September 30, 2022 and 2021, respectively, and 27% during both the nine months ended September 30, 2022 and 2021. Effective income tax rates for interim periods are based upon the Company’s then current estimated annual rate. The effective income tax rate varies based upon the estimate of taxable earnings as well as on the mix of taxable earnings in the various states in which the Company and its subsidiaries operate. As such, the Company’s effective tax rates for the 2022 and 2021 periods reflect an estimate of its annual taxable earnings, state taxes, non-deductible items and changes in valuation allowance on deferred tax assets for each respective year.
Certain of the Company’s state filings are under routine examination. While there is no assurance as to the results of these audits, the Company does not currently anticipate any material adjustments in connection with these examinations. As of September 30, 2022, the Company did not have any significant amounts accrued for interest and penalties or recorded for uncertain tax positions. |
